Changing lives one step at a time with MiracleFeet

How far would you go to get your child the medical care they need? For Juma Mihambo, the answer is a total of 1,200 miles through Tanzanian countryside on an old bicycle. Mihambo’s son was born with clubfoot, a birth defect that affects 75,000 newborns each year. The condition causes one or both feet to curl inward and upward making walking painful or even impossible. 

While clubfoot is a treatable condition, 90% of rural Tanzanians don’t have access to proper care. Children living with untreated clubfoot face a lifetime of pain, social stigma, and poverty.

Miraclefeet foundation for eliminating clubfoot

MiracleFeet’s mission is to increase access to proper treatment for children born with clubfoot in low- and middle-income countries. Through the highly effective Ponseti Method, which utilizes a series of casts and braces in place of invasive surgery, children gain full, lasting mobility. Since their founding in 2010, MiracleFeet has helped over 58,000 children in 327 clinics worldwide. 

It was one of these clinics where Mihambo found treatment for his two-week-old son, Vicent. Loading his family of three on his bicycle, he made the five-hour journey to the clubfoot clinic 18 times over two years. Today, as a happy and healthy toddler, Vicent can usually be found chasing after his siblings.
